The Italian Cultural Institute of Washington presents an original performance by musician and storyteller Fulvio Cama and singer Sara Cappello. Through music and narration, they trace four centuries of the Florio family’s journey from Calabria to Sicily.
Written by Fulvio Cama and Sara Cappello, with music by Fulvio Cama, the performance combines original music and traditional songs with theater, oral storytelling, and visual art. It follows the Florios from their Calabrian origins to their rise to prominence in Sicily during the Belle Époque. Along the way, it explores the culture, traditions, and enduring legacy of the Mediterranean.
The production blends music with storytelling, cultural anthropology with oral tradition, and contemporary music with musical theater. It draws on Italian and regional culture as well as ancient traditions, rituals, myths, and legends. Through rhythm, sound, color, storytelling, and memory, The Florios of Calabria, Lions of Sicily builds a musical and cultural bridge between the Mediterranean and the United States.
