BIOGRAPHY
Costantino Nivola, son of a mason, was born in Orani (Nuoro) in 1911. At the age of 20, he has the chance of moving to Monza to study at the ISIA (Superior Institute of Art.) There he meets Ruth Guggenheim, who becomes his wife in 1938.
After obtaining his diploma as a “Master of Art,” Nivola works as art director for Olivetti, in Milan. He spends six months in Paris where he meets Giorgio de Chirico. In 1939 he leaves Europe and moves to the US to save his jewish wife from racial persecution.
He works as art director for the architectural journalInterior and Industrial Design (later to become Progressive Architecture) and for the magazine You.
In 1944 he displays his paintings and sculptures, together with Saul Steinberg’s, in an exhibition at the Wakefield Gallery in New York. One year later, he meets Le Corbusier, who will become a very close friend.
1950 is the year of his first one-man exhibition at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York. He also exhibits at Quadriennale in Rome, Triennale in Milan, Stable Gallery in New York and Signa Gallery in East Hampton, NY.
The American Institute of Graphics gives him the “Excellence Certificate” (1956.) Later he is awarded with the silver medal of merit for sculpture by the Architectural League of New York. He becomes honorary member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Aja.
Costantino Nivola dies on May 5, 1988.
