A lecture by John T. Spike
In this illustrated presentation, art historian and author, John T. Spike, will speak about two landmark exhibitions that have received national publicity for their fascinating counterpoint as supreme examples of Renaissance wisdom versus Baroque bravura. In observance of the 2013 Year of Italian Culture, the Muscarelle Museum of Art at William & Mary opened in February two major exhibitions: Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane, offering a rare insight into the master’s mind as revealed in a selection of his world-renowned drawings, and A Brush with Passion: Mattia Preti (1613-1699), a spectacular display of fifteen large canvases by this master painter in the style of Caravaggio. With vivid images of the artworks, Dr Spike will give us an expert’s view of this heavyweight competition between Michelangelo, the all-time champion of disegno, and Preti, the courageous contender for colore.
John T. Spike is a noted art historian and art critic, author of more than twenty culturally significant books on Italian art, including major titles for Michelangelo, Caravaggio and Mattia Preti. In 1998, Spike was awarded the honorary citizenship of Taverna, Preti’s birthplace in Calabria. In 2007, he was named to the faculty of the Masters in Sacred Art, Liturgy and Architecture under the auspices of the Pontifical Commission for Cultural Patrimony in Rome. Spike was recognized by the Council of Europe in 2010 as an Expert in the cultural heritage of Malta. Following a year as Distinguished Scholar in Residence, in 2012 Spike was appointed Chief Curator and Assistant Director of the Muscarelle Museum of Art.
