The Italian Cultural Institute of Washington, in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy and Associazione Design Industriale, presents “Compasso d’Oro Career Award”, an exhibition born on the occasion of Italian Design Day 2024 with photographs and objects showcasing Italian design with pieces from selected designers who won this prestigious award.
The exhibition has the primary objective of linking the various stages of Italian design as represented by the products on display with the extraordinary careers of those who, through their lives and constant commitment, have contributed to the success of what we could briefly define as “Made in Italy”.

ABOUT ITALIAN DESIGN DAY
The Giornata del Design Italiano nel Mondo – Italian Design Day is a day of celebration of Italian creativity and ingenuity applied to the field of design. Held annually since 2017, it is a project aimed at promoting Italian design as one of the distinctive sectors of Made in Italy on the international level and it is supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation .
This year’s theme, “Fabbricare valore – inclusività, innovazione e sostenibilità“, focuses on inclusive, innovative and sustainable design and architecture.
Like in the past, this year our work to promote Italian Design Day is part of a wider selection of initiatives proposed by the network of Italian diplomatic representatives and Cultural Institutes in the United States, as well as a constant effort to promote Italian design and architecture as a mark of excellence.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The section of the Compasso d’Oro award dedicated to careers within the ADI Design Museum – Compasso d’Oro has the essential function of linking the various stages of Italian design as represented by the many products on display with the extraordinary careers of those who through their lives and constant commitment have contributed to the success of what we could briefly define as “Made in Italy”. The idea that the museum intends to highlight in the careers section is based on the establishment of an active set of recollections that are completely separated from melancholy and nostalgia, or in other words, the idea of design capable of going beyond the chance nature of a chronological approach in a process of continuous reform of the contemporary. The need for dialogue between disciplines is a cornerstone of the operational method of Italian design; too often this practice is overlooked in a self-referential process that risks distancing us from the values that the world recognizes in Italian design. This is why the museum encourages this dialogue by involving different interpreters along the same path: after graphics, photography is therefore the discipline that, thanks to the highly prized and generous curatorial contribution of a master like Giovanni Chiaramonte together with Michele Nastasi, takes us on an original reading of the career awards. It is a particular snapshot of the leading characters in Italian design and an overall summing-up of the state of the art of Italian photography, which helps us in an original and surprising interpretation of the relationship between operator, spectator and spectrum.
