VOICES

featuring the World Premiere of Polvere by Italian Choreographer Walter Matteini

At The Cultural Arts Center – Montgomery College

Company E returns to the United States with a suite of choreography that spans the globe. VOICES is the Company’s first performance in the US after 14 months. During that time the Company has been working around the world, from Kazakhstan to Argentina, Spain to Italy to Tajikistan. VOICES showcases the company’s deep international roots, bringing works from six different nations, including Israel, Spain, Italy, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, and the United States to the stage.

This event featuring the world premiere of POLVERE (DUST) by celebrated Italian Choreographer, Walter Matteini, was made possible with the support of the Italian Cultural Institute.
Matteini, Director of Company E’s sister company, ImPerfect Dancers of Rome and Pisa, is fast-tracking the international scene, creating ballets and touring throughout Europe and, this spring, North and South America.
“POLVERE, by Matteini, is a deep, emotional work with a gorgeous score that is signature Walter,” noted Kathryn Sydell Pilkington, Company E’s Co-Director. “Walter is a passionate choreographer. He is interested in the human spirit, in the things which bind us together. POLVERE is about a man who is dead but still present in the human world. But he doesn’t understand he has died, and that everyone he knows can no longer see him even as he sees them. And as his body, and spirit, begin to fade and pass on, the dust that he leaves, as it touches others, allows him to see inside them, into their spirits, in profound ways”.
“To see a concept like that realized by a master choreographer is a remarkable thing. I think it will leave the audience spellbound – I know that’s what its done to us as dancers.”

COMPANY E

Co-Founded by Executive Director Paul Gordon Emerson and Co-Artistic Director Kathryn Sydell Pilkington in June 2011, Company E is a contemporary repertory company focusing on international dialogue through the medium of dance. Prior to the formation of Company E, Emerson led Washington, D.C.’s CityDance Ensemble for 15 years. Company E has toured the world since its inception, most often in partnership with the United States Department of State. Concert and education tours have taken the company to Belarus for two months, Kazakhstan on a dozen occasions, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Spain, Italy, Algeria, Russia, Israel and China, among others, promoting cultural dialogues, lasting exchange, partnerships and enduring educational relationships. Of its 2012 nine concert tour to Israel, Ha’aretz, the leading newpaper of Israel wrote that the “company is deserving of its reputation as one of America’s finest.” Company E makes its home in Washington, D.C, where, since its founding, the company has been in partnership with the Washington Performing Arts Society and the Embassies of Israel, Spain and Italy, presenting acclaimed choreography by many of the world’s finest artists, including Ohad Naharin, Paul Taylor, Walter Matteini and other remarkable voices.

The vision of Company E is to break through cultural barriers and showing dance at its best to a global audience.

IMPERFECT DANCERS

Imperfect Dancers Company was founded by Walter Matteini and Ina Broeckx in January 2009. Since its inception, this eight-strong contemporary dance company has proved tirelessly creative as it evolves, expands its repertoire and delights audiences with its sensitive, original and compelling performances. In doing so, it has secured its rightful place in the artistic landscape. The source of that creativity, and what makes the company so different, is its conscious diversity. The individual dancers have their own imperfection that makes them unique and absolutely perfect: true perfection lies in imperfection.
As Walter Matteini puts it, “We all start from imperfection… Every day we try to arrive at perfection, but even if you grasp perfection today, you can never be sure that you will still have it tomorrow.”
It is this paradox that is encapsulated in the company’s name. In its constant striving for the unattainable, for individual and collective perfection, Imperfect Dancers Company sets ever higher standards and pushes itself to new pinnacles of achievement. Since 2009 with the entry of W. Matteini as the new Artistic Director, The ImPerfect DANCERS Company is widespread and promoted internationally by the Italian Cultural Association “Red International Performing Arts” led by dancer/choreographer, Bruno Valentino Perillo.
