Presentation of Washington National Opera new Production
Join distinguished musicologist, opera conductor and director, Saul Lilienstein, Washington National Opera (WNO), for a program of discussion and music that explores Donizetti’s bel canto classic and get a behind-the-scenes look at WNO’s production. Special guests Simone Alberghin, Nicola Ulivieri and Daniel Montenegro will perform some of the opera’s most beloved arias accompanied by pianist Justina Lee.

SAUL LILIENSTEIN
Distinguished musicologist, opera conductor, and director Saul Lilienstein is well known as the voice of Washington National Opera’s Commentaries on CD and for his frequent guest lectures at the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian, and other venues. A former student of Leonard Bernstein, Mr. Lilienstein was active in Baltimore in the 1960s as a choral conductor working as Music Director of the Handel Choir and The Hartford Choral Society. Subsequently, he turned to opera and produced and conducted 50 works as Artistic Director of The Hartford Opera Theater and Operetta Renaissance. His music articles have appeared in many international publications.
SIMONE ALBERGHINI
Italian bass-baritone Simone Alberghini sings the role of Sergeant Belcore in WNO’s The Elixir of Love, and has previously appeared at WNO in Iphigénie en Tauride (2011), The Marriage of Fiagaro (2009 and 2001), The Barber of Seville (2009), La fille du régiment (2007), Così fan tutte (2001), La Cenerentola (2004), and Rigoletto (debut, 1999). A Rossini-Mozart specialist, he regularly appears as Il Conte in Le nozze di Figaro, Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Dandini in La Cenerentola, Assur in Semiramide, Selim in Il turco in Italia, and Lord Sidney in Il viaggio a Reims. Recent successes include Melchtal in Guillaume Tell and Douglas in La donna del lago at Pesaro’s Rossini Festival; the title role in Don Giovanni at La Fenice in Venice; Marcello in La bohème, and Dulcamara in L’elisir d’Amore and Mustafà in L’italiana in Algeri at Teatro Regio in Turin. Other career highlights include his Vienna State Opera debut as Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro, an appearance as Athanael in Thais with Renée Fleming at the Royal Opera House under the baton of Andrew Davis, and as Dandini in La Cenerentola at the Metropolitan Opera and the Glyndebourne Festival. Future roles include Escamillo in Carmen at Chorégies d’Orange in France.
NICOLA ULIVIERI
Italian bass Nicola Ulivieri (Doctor Dulcamara) makes his WNO debut with this production. He graduated from Bolzano Conservatory and soon won “Lirico sperimentale Adriano Belli” and “Musica Riva” prizes, as well as the TV singing competition “Vincerò.” In 2006 he was awarded the prestigious “Premio Abbiati” from Italian critics recognizing his Mozart performances. He has performed in all the major Italian and many international venues, collaborating with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Roberto Abbado, Mehta, Gatti, Harding, Luisi, Oren, Noseda, Mariotti, Benini, Pidò, Chung, and Conlon. He sings mainly Mozart (Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, Die Zauberflöte), Rossini (L’italiana in Algeri, Il turco in Italia, Il barbiere di Siviglia, La Cenerentola, La gazza ladra, Il viaggio a Reims, Le comte Ory), Bellini (I puritani, La sonnambula), and Donizetti (Lucia di Lammermoor, L’elisir d’amore). Among his recent and future engagements: Così fan tutte in Bologna, La sonnambula in Barcelona, Il viaggio a Reims in Amsterdam, and I puritani in Turin.
DANIEL MONTENEGRO
American tenor Daniel Montenegro makes his WNO debut as Nemorino in this production of The Elixir of Love. A graduate of San Francisco Opera’s prestigious Merola Opera Program, he is recognized for a flexible and distinctive tenor voice and a varied repertoire of bel canto and verismo through to contemporary roles. In recent seasons he has made several significant debuts including Mario in Daniel Catán’s Il Postino at Paris’s Théâtre du Châtelet alongside Plácido Domingo (his European opera debut), Roderigo in Otello with San Francisco Opera under Nicola Luisotti, Alfredo in La traviata with Minnesota Opera, as well as Pang in Turandot at the Hollywood Bowl conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. This season he returned to Gotham Chamber Opera for Paul Curran’s production of Baden-Baden 1927. Future appearances include Jupiter in Milhaud’s L’enlèvement d’Europe, Ein Weiser in Hindemith’s Hin und zurück, Der Prinz in Toch’s Die Prinzessin auf der Erbse, and Charlie in Weill’s Mahagonny Songspiel.
JUSTINA LEE
Originally from San Francisco, Justina Lee joined the faculty of the Opera Studio at the University of Maryland at College Park Opera as principal coach in 2008. She has worked as an assistant conductor/pianist and coach for the Metropolitan Opera, Seattle Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Wolf Trap Opera Company, Lorin Maazel’s Châteauville Foundation, the CoOperative Program at Rider University, and Centro Studi Italiani in Urbania, Italy. She has been a collaborative artist with the Cleveland Art Song Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Music Academy of the West. She received a Master of Music in piano performance from the University of California at Los Angeles and a Master of Music in accompanying from the Manhattan School of Music. Concert performances include recitals with tenor Lawrence Brownlee as well as residencies with the Marilyn Horne Foundation, the Châteauville Foundation, and the Manchester Music Festival.
