Giovanni Falcone – An Italian Hero

PALERMO, 1987. Judge Giovanni Falcone and his wife Francesca Morvillo – Photo by Franco Zecchin

Twenty years have passed since Judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo and his three bodyguards, Antonio Montinari, Rocco Di Cillo and Vito Schifani, were killed in Capaci, Sicily, on May 23, 1992.
Throughout his life Giovanni Falcone fought organized crime strenuously and was instrumental in a series of effective actions against it. More importantly, his example – and ultimately his sacrifice – helped to drastically shift the public’s perception of the problem and to raise the hope of defeating the mafia.
The exhibition, curated by Letizia Battaglia, includes photos by Franco Zecchin, Shobha and the curator herself, which focus on Giovanni Falcone’s personality and fully captures the state of mind of a crucial period in our recent history.
During the opening, the Compagnia per la Musica in Roma will offer a concert as a modern requiem, with some intense musical pieces by different Italian composers: a special opportunity for reflection, and a celebration which is not just remembrance of a great Judge and a great Man but, perhaps equally as importantly, a renewal of our commitment to keep Giovanni Falcone’s legacy alive.
