Contromano (Bike Repair Shop)

“Contromano” (Bike Repair Shop), is a documentary film written and directed by Stefano Gabbiani, in collaboration with Lacumbia Film and Mufilm. It was made possible by an online crowdfunding campaign and is now presented as part of the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital.

Turin is one of the most polluted cities in the world and a symbol of a modern post-industrial society. During the twentieth-century Turin was always identified as the Italian capital of the automobile industry (Fiat). Stefano Gabbiani tried to imagine a new, possibly greener, identity for his city and his fellow citizens. The recent bike rediscovery seemed to him a clear sign of a more environmentally sustainable Turin. Today we can see more and more people riding a bike on our roads, both because of the current economics, and also thanks to a new found environmental awareness. Being inspired by all this, the director asked himself what kind of lives and stories were behind a simple bike. To his astonishment, he discovered many different people and stories linked to this simple mean of transport, and somehow connected to the significant changes happening in the city of Turin.
