Barrique: The Third Life of Wood

A second chance for young people and a third use of fine French timber – First a tree, then a wine barrel, now a piece of art. This is the essence of Barrique: The Third Life of Wood .

This project was conceived by San Patrignano and famous Italian wood designer Maurizio Riva. The project began after Riva visited the community in 2012 and was moved by the beauty of the barriques, or wooden wine barrels. He had the idea to use the barriques to create unique, one-of-a-kind, pieces of art that would not only repurpose wine barrels, but also empower San Patrignano community members and invigorate a dwindling craft. This initiative took on a life of its own when it inspired more than thirty of the world’s best designers and architects to join the project, providing additional encouragement for San Patrignano residents.

Barrique: The Third Life of Wood is proud to be part of the official 2013 program for the Year of Italian Culture in the United States that celebrates Italian excellence, culture, industry, artisanship and identity, organized and promoted under the Patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Italy in Washington, DC.
