In the summer of 1939, photographer Ella Maillart and writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach left Switzerland by car. Their destination was Kafiristan (present-day Nuristan Province) in Afghanistan. Using only the diaries and letters Maillart wrote en route, along with her photographs and previously unreleased 16mm footage, Double Journey tells the story of a great explorer at a crucial moment in history, escaping a beleaguered Europe while searching for a pristine and exotic world.
