Exhibit Opening – February 18


Francesco Nonino is
one of few Italian photographers whose work has been acquired by both the Library of Congress and the Phillips Collection. The exhibit at the Embassy of Italy will include some recent works from two series: Come La Vergogna and Atmospheres.

As a homage to his mother, the Italian traditions and to introduce the theme of the upcoming EXPO 2015, some photos of his mother’s hands making pasta will also be on display.
The exhibit will be presented by Susan Behrends Frank, Ph.D., Associate Curator for Research at Phillips Collection.

EXPO 2015, whose theme is “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”, will take place in Milan between May and October.

Francesco Nonino

Francesco Nonino (Udine, 1960) combined a scientific education (degree in medicine, specialist in neurology) with a strong interest in photography pursued by practice and by attending courses at the University and at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna. In the 1990’s he worked as an assistant for Annie Leibovitz in New York City. From 2007 to 2009 he taught photography as an adjunct professor at the University of Udine, Department of Literature and Philosophy. He worked with the Center for Research and Archival of Photography (CRAF) and with the Multimedia Archival for the Memory of Regional Emigration (AMMER) of the region Friuli Venezia Giulia, with which in 2009 he published the book “Americhe”, a photographic survey of Italian immigrants from Friuli who settled in Philadelphia and New York.

His work is included in the following collections: Phillips Collection (Washington, DC); Library of the Congress (Washington, DC); Archive and Study Centre of Communication (CSAC,University of Parma), National Institute of Graphics (Ministry of Culture, Rome), Bibliothéque Nationale de France (Paris), Musée de l’Elysée (Lausanne); Italo Zannier Archive (Fondqazione di Venezia, Venice).

He lives and works in Modena.
