MORE INFO

From May 1 to October 31, Milan will be the center of the world as the host of an Expo unlike any of the world’s fairs that have come before it. Most such events are promotional and commercial, while this one addresses in a complex and positive way the most pressing needs facing the world today: how to maintain the planet while feeding all of its citizens. With nearly 150 nations participating as well as all 20 regions of Italy, the Milan Expo is intended as a locus for the exchange of ideas that combine the timeless wisdom of ancient societies (including Italy) and the reasoned application of the latest technology in a way that is respectful of the needs of the planet.

Fred Plotkin (whom The New York Times described as, “a New York, but has the soul of an Italian”) will be in Milan to speak at the Expo on its opening weekend. In his first American appearance following that talk, Plotkin comes to the Italian Embassy in Washington to recount what is happening at the Expo and many of its highlights. He is known as an expert on everything Italian, including that nation’s peerless food and wine culture. Plotkin studied at the universities of Bologna and Pavia, the latter as a Fulbright Scholar. He has a B.A. with honors in Italian history from the University of Wisconsin. The author of nine books, mostly about Italy, Plotkin was one of the early adherents to the Slow Food movement that underpins the ideas of the Milan Expo.

Another element of the Milan Expo is the remarkable amount of cultural initiatives taking place in the city. These include exhibitions on the genius of Leonardo da Vinci, who lived in Milan longer than anywhere else and remade it as a forward-looking center of technology and culture. Teatro alla Scala (where Fred Plotkin worked in the 1970s) is the undisputed temple of opera and will present an extraordinary season of performances during the Expo, including the world premieres of operas specially created for the Expo. As part of his presentation, Fred Plotkin will explore what makes Milan the remarkable world city that it is, not only during the Expo but every day.
