ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Ocean Stories is dedicated to the Italian Navy’s history, values, people, and commitment to respect the Ocean through its preservation, conservation, and protection, furthering the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The exhibition aims to communicate and promote the diverse universe that makes up the Italian Navy through a narration arising from a multiplicity of subjective perspectives, portraying four thematic areas:

  1. Ocean – A holistic view of the Ocean as one large interconnected sea provides the setting for an exciting story, narrated by those who sail the sea and experience it day after day. The story of the Italian Navy fleet unfolds, with its operations and activities for the conservation, protection, preservation and understanding of the Ocean.
  2. “Tempo” – “Tempo” as time, history, meteorological conditions, as the rhythm of the wind, operations at sea, musical metrics. The central part of the exhibition is dedicated to the day-today operations, acts and gestures of the Italian Navy. The boatswain’s whistle, the clutter of the radar, the noise of the wind, the wake of a ship on the sea, the sound of the bell, the creaking of the ropes. “Tempo” becomes a metronome that marks life aboard all the vessels, a metaphor for society in miniature, where the entire crew, irrespective of rank, become responsible for the governance and safety of the sailing community.
  3. Amerigo Vespucci – The third area is dedicated to Amerigo Vespucci, the most beautiful ship in the world, with the display of a 1:25 scale model and virtual three-dimensional representation. After more than 20 years since the last world tour, Vespucci is now engaged in a worldwide tour that will bring her back to Italy in February 2025. Vespucci is not only an Italian ambassador, but also a bearer of values such as equality, inclusion, education, training, solidarity, and hospitality.
  4. Sailors leading – The final part of the exhibition is dedicated to the core of the Italian Navy: our people. An emotional narration that focuses on humanitarian and environmental sailors’ leading role. Through a mosaic of faces, a voice is given to the different professions that make up the Italian Navy: ship mariners, naval aviators, engineers, shipboard medics, divers, submariners, special forces and amphibious operators.
