Un Coach Come Padre A movie written and directed by Massimiliano Finazzer Flory

The Embassy of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute of Washington invite you to the screening of “Un Coach Come Padre”, a movie written and directed by Massimiliano Finazzer Flory.

The film presents the story of a 12 year old boy who becomes one of Italy’s most prominent basketball figures of all time, Sandro Gamba. It narrates the suffering and hard work that led Italy to win its first Gold Medal at the European Basketball Championship, in 1983. It tells the story behind an extraordinary coach Sandro Gamba, and two exceptional players, Cesare Rubini and Dino Menghin, who represent Italy in the American Basketball Hall of Fame.

The screening will be introduced by the Ambassador of Italy to the United States, Mariangela Zappia, and will be accompanied by the video contributions of Danilo Gallinari, one of the longest-serving Italian players in the NBA, and of Ettore Messina, an Italian assistant coach who followed in Sandro Gamba’s footsteps as his apprentice.

Q&A session with director Massimiliano Finazzer Flory will follow the screening.

Join us on March 20th at 6 pm in the auditorium of the Embassy of Italy.

ABOUT THE MOVIE

It’s 1945. April 25th. A 12 years-old child crosses the street; we are in Milan, in via Washington, a few steps from his house.
Partisans and fascists are shooting each other just close-by. The child’s hand is hit. Mangled. Recovery begins. For the doctors the hand appears to be doomed.
The child first exercises it with a tennis ball, then, thanks to American officials, he tries rehabilitation with a basketball. That wounded hand becomes happy. The suffering of war will give way to success in sport.
From here Finazzer Flory’s film unfolds between warm light and vintage black and white excerpts, bringing into light a 90-year-old man who tells the story of his life on a playground, on the outskirts of Milan, among multi-ethnic kids, all united by their passion: basketball.
