A solo recital of J. S. Bach’s viola da gamba suites and “marvelously intricate, inventive and playful” works by Carl Friedrich Abel. You’ll admire Pandolfo’s extraordinary range of colors on his 17th century Nicolas Bertrand instrument, and the Library’s handsome 1708 viola da gamba, made by Pieter Rombouts.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Paolo Pandolfo tries to build bridges between the past and the present, bringing spontaneous and immediate life in the performance of baroque and renaissance music, together with rigorous philological interpretation.

He studied with Jordi Savall at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland and was a member of Savall’s ensemble Hesperion XX and performed with them throughout the world, making hundreds of concerts and dozens of recordings (1982-1990).

In 1990, after the huge success of his first solo recording (C.P.E.Bach’s Sonatas for Viola da Gamba), he was nominated as Professor of viola da gamba at his alma mater, the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, where he still teaches, whilst his performing carrier takes him all over the world, playing solo, with a continuo group, or with his own ensembles (“Labyrinto” and “Travel Notes Project”). He also dedicates himself to composition, as in the cd Travel Notes, new music for the viola da gamba, combining musical idioms such as baroque, jazz, folk and improvisation.
