Damiano Giuranna
Damiano Giuranna, born to a family of artists, completed his musical studies at the S. Cecilia Conservatory of Music in Rome. He has been particularly influenced by conductors as Carlo Maria Giulini and Bruno Giuranna. He was music director of several international projects as: International Festival for Young Musicians (2001/2007), Giovani all’Opera – Cultural Bridge (2009/2010), Musical Journey through Europe – from regions to nations (2009/2010), Sacred Sounds (2010), Terra Felix (2010), with the support of the European Union and the partnership of many European and international academies, conservatories, universities, private sponsors and public institutions. In July 2003, he was awarded the Silver Shield and Medal by the President of the Italian Republic. Damiano Giuranna is also active as a composer. His last works are two pieces for orchestra, Mediterranean Sounds and Cantica di Nascite e di madri, and two pieces for orchestra, actors and original instruments, Le due lune and Il Ritmo del remo.
He is President of “MusicaEuropa” (NGO) and has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Music Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome.
Since September 15, 2001, when he founded the World Youth Orchestra and soon after the World Youth Chamber Orchestra, Damiano Giuranna has worked on the project of making music in a way which combines commitment to art and commitment to social causes. The Mediterranea project, the World Youth Orchestra Mediterranean Tour, the Euro Mediterranean Brotherhood, were conceived as acts of peace made through the sounds of the Mediterranean region, with the WYO touring in Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Turkey, Slovenia and Italy.
Besides the Mediterranean project, now in its sixth year, the WYO and the WYCO have toured Italy, Germany, Malta, Estonia, Ireland and the United States.
In June 2005, Damiano Giuranna conducted the WYO in a special concert at the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations in New York, promoted by UNICEF’s International Board and the Italian Mission to the United Nations.
The two companies have involved more than 1.200 young talents from the five continents; prestigious tutors from important musical institutions such as the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Juilliard School of Music, the Mozarteum of Salzburg, the Royal Academy of Music of London, and the Orchestra dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia.
World Youth Orchestra
The World Youth Chamber Orchestra (WYCO) was founded by Damiano Giuranna in 2002 as a chamber ensemble composed by the best musicians of the World Youth Orchestra. In July 2002 the Orchestra has been appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and in 2003 it was awarded the Medal and Silver Plaque of the President of the Italian Republic.
The best students of Conservatories, Universities and Music Academies of the five continents are selected to play in the WYCO. Under the artistic direction of Damiano Giuranna the orchestra holds master classes and musical training sessions with internationally well known musicians.
The first concert of the WYCO took place in Roma at the Auditorium Parco della Musica under the baton of Damiano Giuranna. WYCO has since performed in Jesi, Parma, Pavia, Piacenza, Cremona, Firenze, Latina, Spoleto (Italy), and in Malta, Ireland and Estonia, and has played with musicians as Andrea Griminelli, Antonella Ruggiero, Marianna Sirbu and Viviane Hagner.
In 2009 and 2010 the World Youth Chamber Orchestra participated to the project “Cultural Bridges”, promoted by the European Union, performing the opera Il matrimonio segreto by Domenico Cimarosa in Turkey (Ankara, Izmir, Istanbul) and in the Czech Republic (Prague). Between December 2009 and March 2010 WYCO has also participated to the project “Musical Journey through Europe – from regions to nations” performing in Rome, Turin, Potenza, Benevento, Cagliari, Bevagna, Vibo Valentia (Italy), Donaueschingen (Germany), and Salzburg (Austria). In the framework of this project, promoted by the Italian Ministry of Youth, WYCO has collaborated with musicians as Winfried Rademacher, James Creitz, Erik Borgir, Bruno Giuranna, Alissa Margulis, Stefano Montanari and Paul Roczek. In 2011 WYCO was chosen by Hewlett Packard to perform at their senior leadership meeting in San Francisco.
The principals of WYCO have recorded for RAI Radio3, for the Czech National Radio and for European Broadcasting Union.
The World Youth Chamber Orchestra has been invited to perform at the Accademia Nazionale di S.Cecilia in November 2013.
