ABOUT THE PLAY:
The show gives voice to victims of femicide (the murder of women for gender-based reasons) throughout the world with a series of monologues drawn from current events. Italy’s Deputy Minister for Equal Opportunities, Cecilia Guerra and some Ministers of Women of several of the Organization’s member states will appear onstage at the Hall of the Americas to read monologues from victims of femicide.
After more than fifteen successful performances in Italy’s most important theaters, Wounded to death kicks off its international tour with this performance in Washington, after which it will travel to the United Nations in New York for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25th). The tour will then continue to Brussels (November 28) and London (December 3).
Violence against women is a key issue for the International community. More than a third of women worldwide are affected by physical or sexual violence, many at the hands of an intimate partner, according to a report released last June by the World Health Organization. The report represents the first systematic study of global data on the prevalence of violence against women. Among its key findings on partner violence was that globally, 38 per cent of all women who were murdered were killed by their intimate partners. The report, titled “Global and regional estimates of violence against women” can be downloaded at the following link:

Preventing violence against women and other forms of domestic violence is a key priority for Italy, one of the first countries of the Council of Europe to sign and ratify the Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, which now awaits ratification by at least five other signatories before its entry into force. Similarly, the Belém do Pará Convention (Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of Violence against Women) has been ratified by 32 of the 34 member states of the OAS and entered into force on March 5th 1995. A cornerstone of the work of the CIM and the OAS, preventing and responding to violence against women in the Americas has become a key condition for ensuring the full exercise of women’s human rights.
This show is part of the celebrations of 85th anniversary of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) by the Organization of American States (OAS).
