2013 Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital

MOVIE SCREENING

Presented on the occasion of The Washington, DC International Design Festival and in conjunction with The Next Wave: Industrial Design Innovation in the 21st Century .

Among the world’s most influential designers, Italian-born Lella and Massimo Vignelli have created signage and maps for New York’s subway, the interior of Saint Peter’s Church at Citicorp Center, Venini lamps, Heller dinnerware and furniture for Poltrona Frau. In 1965 Massimo brought the Helvetica typeface to the U.S. They have also designed corporate identity programs for Knoll International, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, Ford and American Airlines. For over 40 years their work has earned worldwide respect and numerous national and international awards. The new Vignelli Center for Design Studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology will enable future generations to appreciate the Vignellis’ contributions. The film enters the Vignellis’ world, capturing their intelligence and creativity, as well as their humanity, warmth and humor. Architects Richard Meier and Peter Eisenman, graphic designers Milton Glaser, Michael Bierut and Jessica Helfand are among those who discuss the Vignellis’ work and share anecdotes about them.

Introduced by Douglas Burton, Apartment Zero. Discussion with filmmakers Kathy Brew and Roberto Guerra, moderated by Michele Giacalone, Italian Cultural Institute, follows screening.
