WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
The Embassy of Italy/Italian Cultural Institute, in collaboration with the National Organization of Italian American Women (NOIAW), presents a panel with Rita Cardillo Carty Ph.D, Tina Maiolo Esq. and Ambassador Constance Morella. Diana Femia will be moderating the conversation.
The National Organization of Italian American Women (NOIAW) is the premier organization for women of Italian heritage that is committed to preserving Italian heritage, language and culture by promoting and supporting the advancement of women of Italian ancestry. NOIAW serves its members through cultural programs and networking opportunities, and by supporting young women through scholarship, mentoring and international cultural exchange programs.

Constance Morella has joined the faculty of American University’s School of Public Affairs as the Ambassador in residence of the Women & Politics Institute (WPI). Morella, who received her master’s degree from the School of Public Affairs in 1967, served as U.S. Ambassador to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris from 2003 to 2007. She represented Maryland’s 8th district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1987 to 2003.
While in Congress, Ambassador Morella successfully initiated legislation addressing domestic violence and child support, as well as programs for the elderly, environmental protection, health care reform, and human rights issues. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Boston University before coming to American University for her master’s.
Tina Maiolo is certified by the Embassy of Italy in Washington as its official referral contact concerning requests for legal aid from its constituency. She heads the business law practice for Carr Maloney and is a member of the religious institution, civil rights, employment and labor law, and nonprofit and charitable organization practice groups at the firm.
Tina Maiolo serves as General Counsel for corporations, associations and organizations providing daily advice and counseling on employment related matters. She provides risk management services to employers, including the review, revision and development of employment policies and practices. Tina Maiolo has a bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary and a law degree from the Marshall Wythe School of Law at William and Mary.
Rita Cardillo Carty is Professor and Dean Emerita, George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. Since the beginning of her career in higher education in 1966, Dr. Carty has published and consulted extensively. She served as the Head of the College of Nursing and Health Science WHO (World Health Organization) Collaborating Centre at George Mason University from 1990 – 2006 and has been active in regional, national and international activities and consultation. In July 2000, Dr. Carty was elected for a four-year term as Secretary General of the Global Network of WHO Collaborating Centres for Nursing and Midwifery Development, and served in that position until June 2004. During that time she was also a member of the Global Advisory Group on Nursing and Midwifery to the Director General of the World Health Organization.
Presently, she is a Visiting Professor, School of Nursing, University of Alabama, Birmingham. Her main interests focus on international health care education, collaboration and contracting, health policy and international health care.
