4 ELEMENTS

On the occasion of the Giornata del Contemporaneo, the Italian Cultural Institute of Washington, in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy, presents “4 ELEMENTS”, a project for videomapping and piano by the Italian visual artists of Imaginarium Studio and musician Sun Hee You, focused on the relationship between nature and humanity. The performance includes music by Chopin, Casella, Liszt, Debussy, Vacchi and Hyung-Ki Joo.

After introductory remarks by Ambassador Mariangela Zappia, immersive images by Italian Artists Francesca Pasquinucci and Davide Giannoni of Imaginarium Studio will delight the audience on the music played by pianist Sun Hee You. It will be the first video performance by Imaginarium in the United States, after a series of successful exhibits in other international venues and before a new show at MAXXI Museum in Rome on October 23.

Now in its eighteenth edition, the Giornata del Contemporaneo is promoted by AMACI – Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums, with the support Italian Ministry of Culture and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. This year, the event is dedicated to the theme of ecology and sustainability: global issues that encourage to rethink the contemporary art system through a renewed awareness and a more widespread sensitivity.

Following the performance – from 6:30pm to 10:30pm – a special 10-minute video-mapping will be projected in loop on the Embassy façade.

COVID POLICY: Valid Photo ID with proof of full Covid vaccination OR Covid antigen test (24 hours prior to the event for non-vaccinated people) are required and must be provided to the guard at Embassy entrance.

Face masks are required while at the Embassy

MORE ON THE ARTISTS AND “4 ELEMENTS”

“4 ELEMENTS” is a dreamlike journey, filled with legendary anecdotes and references to science and philosophy, that guides the audience through the connections between the 4 elements (fire, water, air, earth) and the human being, in an attempt to reflect on the lack of environmental consciousness.
Incorporating the sounds of gravitational waves captured by VIRGO interferometer hosted by European Gravitational Observatory (EGO) in Cascina, “4 ELEMENTS” represents an opportunity to think music as natural harmony with the elements and to be inspired by visual poetry while raising awareness about the future of humanity and of our spectacular planet Earth.

IMAGINARIUM, a Tuscan studio active since 2011, awarded in 2018 as Italian Excellence for Art by the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles and the Italy – America Chamber of Commerce West (IACCW) sets design and visual arts for music and opera. It is directed by Davide Giannoni and Francesca Pasquinucci, who, after their musical, literary, artistic and theatrical studies, developed their research focused on the interaction between traditional material arts and digital arts. They turned their interest to video mapping as storytelling and the creation of dreamlike dream spaces, where their surreal style anchored in the rules of poetry can keep evolving.

Pianist Sun Hee You attended the Yewon School, the most prestigious Korean Music School for child prodigies. At age 14, she moved to Italy where she graduated from the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, continuing her studies under the guidance of legendary pianist Lazar Berman. Award-winning in Italy and abroad, she is one of the most interesting emerging talents, gathering successes and approval from both the public and critics. Her particular focus on contemporary music and the search for new repertoires has intrigued a number of contemporary composers, as well as several important institutions and music festivals.
