The Embassy of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute cordially invite you to a lecture and book presentation.
Conference:
Luisa Cifarelli (Univ. of Bologna, Società Italiana di Fisica and Centro Fermi President): Enrico Fermi and His First Experiments with Neutrons.
Presentation of the volume:
The Lost Notebook of Enrico Fermi – The True Story of the Discovery of Neutron-Induced Radioactivity (SIF – Springer)
by Francesco Guerra and Nadia Robotti
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the first human-made self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction, realized by Enrico Fermi at the University of Chicago, the Italian Embassy in Washington is organizing an event focused on the theme of innovation and scientific research. The experimental research that Enrico Fermi and his group carried out in the mid-thirties of last century at the Physics Institute of Via Panisperna in Rome will be illustrated, starting from a lost and recently regained notebook of Fermi where the actual discovery of neutron-induced radioactivity is duly documented. This extraordinary research, that earned him the Nobel Prize in 1938, was the preamble of Fermi’s achievements later on in the United States.
