Tintoretto at 500: from Venice to Washington

The symposium “Tintoretto at 500: From Venice to Washington” is being organized in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Jacopo

Tintoretto, in conjunction with the major exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, “Tintoretto: Artist of Renaissance Venice,” and the complementary exhibitions, “Drawing in Tintoretto’s Venice” and “Venetian Prints in the Time of Tintoretto.”

Following its opening at the Palazzo Ducale, Venice, in September 2018, the exhibition “Tintoretto: Artist of Renaissance Venice” will be on view at the National Gallery of Art—its only other venue—from March 24 through July 7, 2019. As the first retrospective of the artist in North America, it will include many significant international loans traveling to the U.S. for the first time and feature nearly 50 paintings and more than a dozen works on paper spanning the artist’s entire career and ranging from regal portraits of Venetian aristocracy to religious and mythological narrative scenes. The exhibit is organized by the National Gallery of Art and the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia with the special collaboration of the Gallerie dell’Accademia, Venice.

The symposium “Tintoretto at 500: From Venice to Washington” will cover key topics of Tintoretto’s world and will include presentations by Frederick Ilchman and Robert Echols, guest co-curators at the National Gallery of Art, and by the Directors and representatives of the main Italian lenders and collaborating institutions to the exhibit.
