EuroAsia Shorts proudly presents a free annual week of short films from Europe, Asia, and the United States, presented by embassies and cultural centers based in Washington, D.C. Every program includes a series of shorts followed by cultural Q&A and discussion. Some nights include special content or events! Join an international cinematic dialogue that is uniquely Washingtonian. The 2022 festival is a mixed format, with some programs streaming online and some in-person at unique embassy venues.

Negative Space

MIYU Productions
A French stop motion animated short film by Max Porter (USA) and Ru Kuwahata (Japan). Based on a 150-word poem by Ron Koertge, Negative Space is a short animated film that depicts a father-and-son relationship through the art of packing a suitcase.

Austria, 2021, 4 min.
Director: Maurer Leopold
In his minimalist animated film, Leopold Maurer draws attention to the fact that, despite existing notions on differences, people behave in very similar ways. This visually fascinating concept of presenting stencils in black or white also succeeds in undermining simplistic hypotheses regarding identity and culture.

Following spiritual guidance, Made Gede Suardika takes a path of becoming an Mpu (Kris maker), preserving the almost-extinct artistry amid today’s challenges.
Bis zum letzten Tropfen (To the Last Drop)

To the beat of dripping chemo, an infusion stand fights for the life of a cancer patient. But he is resisting tenaciously. If only death was not constantly making a courtesy call on him. The stand continues its mission to the last drop.
반딧불이 (Fireflies)

A grim reaper comes to the grave of a young man, but their business is upended when the young ghost meets the ghost of a recently deceased elderly woman—someone he once knew very well. An otherworldly, tragic love story.

An unusual race between a courier and a song.
A Straight Line
Oman, 2020, 2 min.

A handicapped man overcomes his disability with his family’s support.
Awkward

Director: Nata Matlukh
A day full of socially awkward moments. In this film, director Nata Matlukh features social awkwardness that people experience in everyday life, with a touch of embarrassment and absurdity.

2022 Theme: The Art of Life
The theme for EuroAsia Shorts 2022 is The Art of Life. Life, like progress, definitely does not proceed in a straight line. The never-ending challenge of balancing, enjoying, and dealing with life is an art form, both universal and futile in our attempts to master it. There is no perfect path, partner, or recipe, and yet we seek and celebrate them in life just the same, against all odds and no matter the hardship. This year’s EuroAsia Shorts is about the inseparability of the good, the bad, and the ugly in life, and how every life lived well can be its own masterpiece.
About the Festival
Now in its 16th year (2022), EuroAsia Shorts (originally the Asian-European Short Film Showcase) remains a collaboration between a small group of Washington, D.C. embassies and cultural centers. Since 2006, the festival has presented more than 300 short films, including many award-winning shorts making their U.S. debut. Each year a broad variety of films and styles are presented, connected by a single theme. With post-film cultural Q&A’s and discussions with experts each night, EuroAsia Shorts offers an international cinematic dialogue that is uniquely Washingtonian.
