February 24 – 6 pm
On February 24th, 2022, the Russian Federation initiated an unjustified and large-scale aggression on the Ukrainian nation. One year later, the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington DC invite you to attend the screening of the film-documentary “Kordon”, by the young Italian director Alice Tomassini, to commemorate this act of aggression and the tragic consequences of this conflict that are still under our eyes today.
ABOUT THE MOVIE
The film, produced by Vatican Media (Centro Televisivo Vaticano) and Tenderstories, an Italian audiovisual production company, narrates the story of five Ukrainian volunteers whose lives intersect in a station in the outskirts of Ukraine, near the border with Hungary.
The five volunteers find themselves going back and forth between Ukraine and Hungary to try to give hope to their own people under seige. Their stories are reflected in the stories of the over seven million women and children who, due to the war, have found themselves running away from their own country leaving all behind. The film underlines the importance of the role that women play to promote peace in a world at war by telling an emotionally charged story of courage, resistance, and solidarity.
The movie is directed by Alice Tomassini and is one of the the highest-level Italian productions among those that have dealt with the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in recent months.
The film was presented as a world premier during the “Festa del Cinema di Roma 2022” (Rome Film Festival 2022) where it was awarded the prize “Best Film addressing foreign themes”. The film was then screened at the “UK Film Festival” in London where it won the “Best Documentary” award, and in Berlin at the “Doc.Berlin Documentary Film Festival” where it earned considerable attention with audiences and critics alike.
