Making contemporary a text written centuries ago

at Catholic University of America (3PM)


Laura Caparrotti, Kairos Italy Theater (KIT) Artistic Director and Decameron director, will lead a seminar on how KIT worked on a text written in 1348. The seminar will underline not only the work with the actors but also the work on the translation of the language and the meaning in the Decameron. The company will present part of the Seventh Story from Day the Seventh to better explain the process of working on the Decameron.

KIT-KAIROS ITALY THEATER

KIT-KAIROS ITALY THEATER is internationally recognized as the Italian Theater Company in NY. KIT’s mission is to spread Italian Culture and to create an Italian Culture Network in order to maintain and spread the knowledge of Italy in the United States. KIT has produced more than 20 performances and events over the years, collaborating with Off-Off and Off-Broadway theaters and with US Institutions (The Kitchen, The Fringe Festival, the Abrons Art Center, Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimo’ at NYU, Italian Academy at Columbia University, Film Society at Lincoln Center, Dahesh Museum of Art, NY Hall of Science, the Flea Theatre, Theater for the New City, Montclair State University, Suffolk County Community College, the Bernie West Theater at Baruch College, the cell theatre, etc). Never-before-translated works by major Italian playwrights have been presented to US audiences, who have grown in appreciation and in number since KIT’s first production in 1997. KIT has also created the Double Theatre Experience, where One-Act plays are performed first in English and then in Italian in the same evening, by different casts. KIT also offers workshops on Commedia dell’Arte and other traditional Italian theater techniques as well as Italian&Theatre classes. In 2013, KIT inaugurated In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY, the first Italian Theater festival to take place in all 5 New York City Boroughs. KIT is the Theater Company in residence at Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo’ at NYU.

PERFORMANCE PROGRAM

After presenting the Mandragola, the YoungKIT presents the Decameron and in particular the three novels that Machiavelli moved from to write the Mandragola.

The Decameron, subtitled Prencipe Galeotto, is a collection of novellas by the 14th-century Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio (1313–1375). The book is structured as a frame story containing 100 tales told by a group of seven young women and three young men sheltering in a secluded villa just outside Florence to escape the Black Death, which was afflicting the city. Boccaccio probably conceived the Decameron after the epidemic of 1348, and completed it by 1353.

Ilaria Ambrogi is a New York based Italian actress. In Rome, she trained at Teatro Azione and starred in different theater productions including “Peter Pan” at Teatro Vascello. She trained in New York as well, and worked in numerous theater and film productions including her one-woman show “Superstars”. www.ilariaambrogi.org

Francesco Andolfi is a member of YoungKIT and an Italian NY based actor who has been pursuing and forging his acting career in the past two years preceded by the Stella Adler Studio Conservatory. “Working on Italian Literature Classics is to me, not only giving life to what my legacy signifies, but also contributing to spread what Italy is to the eyes of whom still thinks there is a single person in Italy who owns a checkered tablecloth”.

Giulia Bisinella Belluno, Italy. American Academy of Dramatic Arts alumna and member of its 2012-13 NY Theater Company; B.A. in Performing Arts at the European Academy of Dramatic Arts “Link Academy”. Upon joining KIT, Giulia’s favorite roles include Daniela (Waxing West) and Ligurio (Mandrake Root). She is thrilled and proud of this new Decameron’s production. www.giuliabisinella.com

Carlotta Brentan is a theater, voiceover and film actress. Training: American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and Academy Company 2012-2013. Francesco Meola has two degrees: in Italian Modern Literature and in acting at the prestigious Accademia dei Filodrammatici in Milan, Italy. In NYC he specialized at The Lee Strasberg Institute. He worked in more than 20 plays and took part in several short movies, commercials and shows for kids. He is also a writer.

Jacopo Rampini has appeared Off-Broadway and in a number of feature films, shorts, and independent films. He plays young Joseph Stalin in the upcoming TV show World Wars on the History Channel. Jacopo has been a member of the Kairos Italy Theatre Company since 2012. www.jacoporampini.com

Laura Caparrotti (Director) has a Master degree in Performing Arts, Cinema and Theatre History from the University “La Sapienza” in Rome. She also studied independently with Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo and Annie Girardot. After ten years of professional theatre in Italy, she relocated to New York, where she has directed and/or performed at The Kitchen, The Fringe Festival, The Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center, the cell, the Flea and Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimo’, among other venues. She was the Assistant to the Director of the Off Broadway production of Eduardo De Filippo’s Souls of Naples featuring John Turturro. She is the world-wide representative of the De Curtis Family, and the curator of Excerpts of a Prince Named Totò, the official traveling exhibition on the Italian iconic actor Totò. She is also a playwright, a journalist, a teacher, a lecturer, a consultant and dialect coach for Italian (Boardwalk Empire) a curator and a panelist for NYSCA.  She is member of the Director’s Lab at Lincoln Center, of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, the League of Professional Theater Women and the Founding Artistic Director of the Italian Theater Company in NY Kairos Italy Theater. In 2013, Laura started In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY, the first Italian Theater Festival to take place in all 5 NY Boroughs.
