The Italian Cultural Institute of Washington, in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC (NGA), presents a lecture on the Italian painter Vittore Carpaccio whose exhibition is currently on display at NGA.

Gretchen A. Hirschauer, Curator of Italian and Spanish Paintings at NGA, will provide an overview of the exhibition and the works on view, including Carpaccio’s great canvases for the various scuole (i.e. schools) or confraternities of Venice for which he is best known while Joanna R. Dunn, Senior Painting Conservator at NGA, will talk about the conservation work that was completed in preparation for the exhibition.

The exhibition, Vittore Carpaccio: Master Storyteller of Renaissance Venice will be open at the National Gallery of Art until February 12, 2023.

Joanna Dunn is a Senior Painting Conservator at the National Gallery of Art. She holds a BA from Mary Washington University and an MS in art conservation from the University of Delaware. Since coming to the National Gallery in 2002, she has treated numerous paintings in the Gallery’s collection by American and European artists, including Jacopo Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese, and Vittore Carpaccio. She has published and lectured on a variety of the National Gallery of Art’s paintings and the artists who created them, most notably an essay on Carpaccio’s technique in the catalogue for the exhibition Vittore Carpaccio: Master Storyteller of Renaissance Venice.

Gretchen A. Hirschauer is a curator of Italian and Spanish paintings at the National Gallery of Art, Washington. Hirschauer holds a BA from Northwestern University and an MA from the Villa Schifanoia Graduate School of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy. Since arriving at the Gallery in 1978, she has organized or collaborated on many exhibitions and catalogs; most recently she curated Piero di Cosimo: The Poetry of Painting in Renaissance Florence in 2015, Andrea del Verrocchio: Sculpture and Painter in Renaissance Florence in 2019, and collaborated on Vittore Carpaccio: Master Storyteller of Renaissance Venice in 2022.
