available online > Tandem: Fabrizio Bosso & Julian Oliver Mazzariello

The tandem Fabrizio Bosso and Julian Oliver Mazzariello returns to Washington through our virtual stage in partnership with the DC Jazz Festival. A tandem they have been riding together for most of their musical careers, and artistically pedaling together towards shared goals. A long history of music and friendship, that started in the early 2000s, with the High Five, a band of emerging youngsters with a great future. From that moment on, Bosso and Mazzariello have been a constant presence, from the Quartet, one of the best and most stable Italian jazz bands, to the Quintet for the album “Duke”.

Bebop of the third millennium, with a proverbial sense of swing and flow, Fabrizio Bosso is one of the most acclaimed trumpet players in Italy today. For this exclusive live performance from LOAD Recording Studios in Rome, Bosso and Mazzariello will delight the audience with a virtuoso duet featuring a dazzling reinterpretation of Italian classics like Domenica è sempre domenica along with original compositions.

 FABRIZIO BOSSO

bossoItalian post-bop trumpet sensation Fabrizio Bosso was born in Turin in 1973. He started playing at the age of five, studying under his father. He graduated from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Turin only ten years later, at fifteen. While in school, Bosso discovered jazz, playing with a big band and in small ensembles. Upon graduating, he was awarded a scholarship to study at St. Mary’s College in Washington, where he continued to pursue his new love for improvisation.

Starting in 1993, he garnered an international reputation for his flawless technique and exceptionally personal sound, touring under bandleaders like George Russell, Dave Liebman, and the great Steve Coleman. The next year, he won Summertime Jazz’s Best Band with his quintet, who were soon to make their recording debut.

At the age of 26, Bosso’s first album as a bandleader, Fast Flight, was released by Red Records. Impressing critics worldwide, Bosso won the “Miglior Nuovo Talento” (Best New Talent) award, chosen in a survey organized by “Musica Jazz” magazine. His second outing as front man would be for the Blue Note label in 2007.

Bosso’s career includes numerous performances as solo trumpeter, with important conductors such as Wayne Marshall or Maria Schneider. In Italy, Bosso has worked with Gianni Basso, Stefano Di Battista, Salvatore Bonafede, Giovanni Mazzarino, Rita Marcotulli and Enrico Pieranunzi.

JULIAN OLIVER MAZZARIELLO

mazzarielloJulian Oliver Mazzariello was born in 1978 in Hatfield, England. He began his piano studies at the age of seven and already showed a keen interest in “improvisation”.

At thirteen he won major awards such as: “National Telegraph Young Jazz Musician of the Year”; together with contemporary drummer Jose Joyette he won the “291Club” television contest with the duo “Future Shock”.

He studied classical piano with the “Associated Board of the Royal School of Music”. At seventeen he decides to move to Italy, to Cava Dei Tirreni, in the province of Salerno. It is the town of origin of his father – also a musician – but he is also convinced that certain cultural aspects of the territory can be influential for his artistic and human expressiveness.

Thus begins a journey of knowledge and growth with the local music scene: the Deidda brothers, Giovanni Amato, Pietro Vitale, Jerry Popolo, Giampiero Virtuoso, Amedeo Ariano. He becomes the pianist of the “Daniele Scannapieco 4tet” with Stefano di Battista and Andrea Ceccarelli and the “High Five Quintet” with Fabrizio Bosso, Daniele Scannapieco, Pietro Ciancaglini and Lorenzo Tucci.

He collaborated with the greatest jazz musicians of national and international scene: Enrico Rava, Maria Pia De Vito, Roberto Gatto, Giovanni Tommaso, to name just a few.
