To celebrate the release of Three O’ Clock in the Morning, join us for a talk with international bestselling writer Gianrico Carofiglio, in conversation with Nicoletta Pireddu.
The discussion will focus on Carofiglio’s novels, his career path from an anti-Mafia prosecutor to a full-time writer, his inspiration, his thoughts about the passing of time, and his ideas of truth and justice as well as the role of humanities in personal and professional education.
Gianrico Carofiglio – a former prosecutor specialized in organized crime, who served as Senator from 2008 to 2013 – is a multi-award winning author with bestselling books translated into 27 languages worldwide. Nicoletta Pireddu is Professor of Italian and Comparative Literature at Georgetown University and Inaugural Director of the Georgetown Humanities Initiative.

GIANRICO CAROFIGLIO
Gianrico Carofiglio was born in Bari. He has long been a public prosecutor, specialising in investigations into organised crime. In 2007 he was appointed consultant to the Anti-Mafia Parliamentary Commission and from 2008 to 2013 he was a Senator of the Republic. He made his debut in fiction with Testimone inconsapevole in 2002, in which he introduced the character of the lawyer Guido Guerrieri, the protagonist of six novels, including La misura del tempo, a finalist for the Strega Prize in 2020. With over six million copies sold, he is the author of novels, short stories and essays translated worldwide and read by him in audio books.
His most recent titles are the essay La nuova manomissione delle parole (2021) and the crime novel La disciplina di Penelope (2021). His many awards include the 2005 Bancarella Prize for Il passato è una terra straniera, the 2010 Selezione Campiello Prize for Le perfezioni provvisorie, and the 2014 Scerbanenco Prize for Una mutevole verità, the first appearance of Marshal Pietro Fenoglio. NICOLETTA PIREDDU
Nicoletta Pireddu is Inaugural Director of the Georgetown Humanities Initiative, Professor of Italian and Comparative Literature, and Director of the Global and Comparative Literature Program at Georgetown University.
Her research, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Howard Foundation, focuses on European literary and cultural relations, intellectual history, translation studies, Mediterranean and island studies, borders, and migration. In addition to over eighty articles in major international journals and volumes, her most recent books include Migrating Minds. Theories and Practices of Cultural Cosmopolitanism (2021), Reframing Critical, Literary, and Cultural Theories. Thought on the Edge (2018), The Works of Claudio Magris. Temporary Homes, Mobile Identities, European Borders (2015) and the first English annotated editions of Scipio Sighele’s works–The Criminal Crowd and Other Writings on Mass Society (2018).
She is the recipient of the “Mario Soldati” award for literary criticism, the American Association for Italian Studies Book Award, as well as the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Distinguished Service Award from Georgetown University.
