Cinema Italiano: A Better Way To Stay Home is back this month with “Tornare” (Feel Your Memories), a movie that reunites Film Director Cristina Comencini and acclaimed actress Giovanna Mezzogiorno fourteen years after their Oscar nominated “La Bestia nel Cuore” (Don’t Tell).

The screening will be followed by an exclusive interview with Cristina Comencini focusing on “Tornare”, the role of women in cinema, and the future of film after the pandemic conducted by Francesca Calamita, professor of Italian and expert on cinema and gender studies at the University of Virginia.

Naples, 1990s. Alice returns home from the United States for her father’s funeral after many years living abroad. She stays at the seaside family home, which Alice and her sister have decided to sell. Now empty of people, but still full of memories, together they need to clear it of the objects accumulated over a lifetime.

Alice forms a new friendship with Marc, who she met at her father’s memorial service. While roaming the house, thinking of being alone, she stumbles upon a mysterious girl, and immediately unexpected lost childhood memories resurface. Suddenly, a new world opens up for Alice, dangerous and intriguing, that sheds light on her past and her existence.

Cristina Comencini is a film director, screenwriter and novelist. She began her career as a screenwriter with her father, Italian director Luigi Comencini, co-writing Catherine’s Wedding (1982). After graduating with an Economics degree, she made her directorial debut in 1988 with Zoo. Comencini’s film Don’t Tell (2005) received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and she is also known for her films When the Night (2011) and Latin Lover (2015).

Francesca Calamita is professor of Italian and Director of UVa in Italy program at the University of Virginia. Dr Calamita’s interdisciplinary research, transnational and anchored in feminist theory, bridges Italian women’s writing, cultural studies and gender studies. More specifically, she investigates how women’s relationship with food and body is portrayed in fiction, pop culture, advertisements, video performances and films. Her research interests also include medical humanities and migrant literature.
