Il Viaggio”, the title of this concert, represents the long journey from Naples to Rome, from the Middle East to Africa and Latina America, that Tiziana Tosca Donati – aka Tosca on stage – will take us on.

Singer, actress, and performer, Tosca has a brilliant solo career and she also collaborated with several great Italian and international artists, such as Nicola Piovani, Ennio Morricone, Chico Buarque, Ivan Lins, among others.

Let’s embrace the holiday spirit and traditions by virtually connecting Italy to the world through the colors, scents and sounds evoked by the unmistakable voice of Tosca

TIZIANA “TOSCA” DONATI

tosca

Tiziana Donati, who performs under the stage name Tosca, was born in Rome. Winner of the Sanremo Festival in 1996, Tosca has recorded 9 studio albums, 6 live albums and duets with many other artists.

She has enjoyed a successful stage career, appearing in numerous theatrical productions, and has been invited to perform songs for several movies, including the title track for Franco Zeffirelli’s version of Jane Eyre in 1996. She also sang and spoke the part of Anastasia in the Italian dubbed version of the Disney cartoon with the same title.

Tiziana said her love of singing began as a child when she suffered from acute articular rheumatism, a debilitating health condition affecting the joints, which prevented her from taking part in normal activities.  She did, however, accompany her grandmother to church almost every day and soon she set her heart on becoming a member of the choir.

She was successfully accepted in the choir and drew a sense of pride and self-worth from being asked to stand on a chair and sing at family gatherings. Singing, and later acting, gave her a sense of purpose.

In her teens, Donati joined a theatre company in Rome and began singing in a piano bar in the city, where she was spotted by Renzo Arbore, a musician and television presenter, who invited her to sing on the show Il caso Sanremo, a unique program in which winning songs from different editions of the Sanremo Festival were put on “trial” in a set resembling a courtroom.

The exposure propelled her into the public eye. She adopted Tosca as a stage name and released her first album in 1992. Her big break, though, was winning Sanremo in 1996 with Vorrei incontrarti fra cent’anni – I Want To Meet You In One Hundred Years – a song written by Rosalino Cellamare, aka Ron on stage, who also provided backing vocals and guitar.

After another appearance on Sanremo the following year, she released the album Incontri e passaggi, a collection of songs written for her by artists such as Lucio Dalla, Chico Buarque de Holanda, Grazia Di Michele, Ennio Morricone and Mariella Nava, for which she won the Targa Tenco prize as the year’s outstanding performer.

Since 2000, Donati has mixed concerts with stage shows and musicals and she has recently worked as a section director at the Pasolini Workshop in Rome, a venture in honor of film director Pier Paolo Pasolini, which runs in collaboration with the University of Rome and the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia to discover and nurture new talent.

In 2018, Tosca celebrated her life in music with a sold-out concert at the Auditorium in Parco della Musica in Rome, in which she was joined on stage by artists and friends Nicola Piovani, Danilo Rea and Joe Barbieri.

In April 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, she recorded “Il canto degli italiani”, an acoustical reinterpretation of the Italian anthem, a single and a video chosen to open the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of Italy on April 25. The funds raised through its digital sale have been donated for the purchase of personal protective equipment for Red Cross volunteers.

In June 2020, by winning two “Tenco Targhe” for best single song with “Ho amato tutto”, and as best songwriter for the album “Morabeza”, she became part of an elite club reserved to the very few Italian artists who earned two of what are considered the most technical awards for Italian music entrusted to a jury of journalists and music experts.

In June 2020 as well, she received the “Protagonist of the Year” award for her performance in the documentary “The sound of the voice”, which was one of the finalist features of the Documentaries at the Nastri d’Argento 2020′.
