streaming > Lucia’s Grace (Troppa Grazia) by Gianni Zanasi

Our Cinema Italiano: A Better Way to StayHome returns with Lucia’s Grace (Troppa Grazia) by Gianni Zanasi, an irresistible crowd-pleaser and winner as Best European Film at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight 2018.

Single mother Lucia (Alba Rohrwacher – also in Daughter of Mine, Perfect Strangers) struggles to keep a balance between raising her teenage daughter, a complicated relationship, and her career as a land surveyor. Her future is jeopardized when she realizes that, due to the city council’s inaccurate maps, the site for an ambitious new building is at risk for geological hazards, and she is afraid to speak up for fear of losing her job.

Suddenly and mysteriously, a foreign woman in a shawl appears, and she follows Lucia around trying to convince her not only to stand up to her superiors, but also to recommend the building of a church instead. Lucia’s belief in miracles is about to be put to the test.

Hailed as a “hidden gem” by The Hollywood Reporter, dramatic, amusing and entertaining – Lucia’s Grace is a modern miracle.

Gianni Zanasi studied philosophy at the University of Bologna before attending a playwriting school and cinema course directed by Nanni Moretti. He also attended the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, where he obtained a diploma in directing in 1992.  Nella mischia, selected for the Quinzaine des Realisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival was his director’s debut in 1995.

In 1999 he directed Fuori dime and A domani, which was presented at the Venice Film Festival.  In 2004, he directed the documentary La vita breve ma la giornata è lunghissima, with Lucio Pellegrini, receiving a Special Mention from the Venice Film Festival jury. In 2007 – out of competition –  he presented Non pensarci, a bittersweet comedy starring Valerio Mastandrea. The film was received positively by critics, and most notably by Paolo Mereghetti who stated: “the clichés of Italian-styles dramas have been sidestepped , avoided or overturned (…) with a winning lightness and irony”.

After working on the television series of Non pensarci, Zanasi returned to the cinema with La felicità è un sistema complesso, featuring Giuseppe Battiston and again Valerio Mastandrea. The original soundtrack, composed by Niccolò Contessa, is known under the alias of I Cani.
