online > Quartetto Noȗs: A Musical Journey to Italy

Together with our friends at the Music Programs of the National Gallery of Art, we are pleased to present the Quartetto Noûs, performing a classical recital of string quartets by BoccheriniPuccini and Mozart from the breathtaking setting of Villa Carlotta on Lake Como, Italy.

Noûs (nùs), the ancient Greek word for “mind” and “intellect”, thus “rationality”, was also used in philosophy to refer to the faculty of the human mind to perceive inspiration and creativity, and therefore defined as the mind’s eye. By choosing this name, Quartetto Noûs’ goal is to reach the audience at a deeper level that only the mind’s eye can perceive.

Quartetto Noûs, composed of four young Italian musicians (Tiziano Baviera - Violin; Alberto Franchin - Violin; Sara Dambruoso - Viola; Tommaso Tesini - Cello) was formed in 2011.  In a very short time, it quickly established itself as one of the most interesting chamber music ensembles of its generation. Its immersive performances are the result of a combination of professional training in the Italian tradition and the most influential European schools.

QUARTETTO NOÛS

quartetto nous2

The Quartetto Noûs, composed of four young Italian musicians, was founded in 2011 at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano. The quartet received its training at the Accademia “Walter Stauffer” in Cremona, in the class of the Quartetto di Cremona, and at the Musik Akademie of Basel in the class of Reiner Schmidt (Hagen Quartet). They also studied with internationally acclaimed teachers such as Hatto Beyerle (Alban Berg Quartet), Heime Müller (Artemis Quartet) and Günter Pichler.

Quartetto Noûs won the first prize at the “Luigi Nono” International Competition in Venaria Reale in Turin, and at the XXI “Anemos International Competition” in Rome. In 2014, they were awarded an honorable mention at the “Sony Classical Talent Scout” in Madesimo, Italy.

In 2015, they received the “Arthur Rubinstein – Una Vita nella Musica” Award by La Fenice Theatre in Venice for “being one of the most promising Italian chamber music groups and for revealing, in a still brief career, to be able to approach the great literature for string quartets in a mature manner, seeking a reasoned and not ephemeral interpretation in the masterpieces of the classic-romantic period and of the twentieth century, continuing at the same time a serious and not episodic research even within the language of the contemporary music”.

In 2015, the quartet was awarded the “Piero Farulli” Prize for the best emerging chamber music group of the year, as part of the XXXIV “Franco Abbiati” Award, the most prestigious Italian music critics award.

Quartetto Noûs has performed for important Italian concert seasons such as Società del Quartetto in Milan, Bologna Festival, Unione Musicale in Turin, I Concerti del Quirinale in Rome (broadcast live on Rai Radio3), GOG in Genoa, Società Veneziana dei Concerti in Venice, Acm Chamber Music in Trieste, Amici della Musica in Palermo, Associazione Musicale Lucchese, Stradivari Festival in Cremona.

They are regularly invited to perform in Germany, Switzerland, England, France, Spain, Canada, United States, South Korea and China. The Quartetto’s performances have been broadcast on several radio stations such as Venice Classic Radio, Radio Clásica, RSI and Radio 3.

In July 2019, Quartetto Noûs released a new CD featuring works of Boccherini, Puccini, Verdi and Respighi for the label “Warner Classics”.
