Back from Italy 2019: Building within the dimension of history

The Association of American College and University Programs in Italy, in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute, are pleased to present the second edition of “Back from Italy”, a talk and exhibit featuring stories and works by young architecture students who spent a semester in Italy.

For non-European architects in their early twenties, spending a semester in Italy is a powerful experience, which can profoundly affect the way they see the world and have a lasting influence on their work.  The Association of American Colleges and University Programs in Italy (AACUPI) puts the number of students studying architecture in Italy at about 6000.

While the number is certainly impressive, what will be explored in this event is the extent and significance of the cultural impact that studying in Italy had upon the work of these young architects.

The theme chosen for this year’s workshops is “Building within the dimension of history”. The idea comes from the belief that working on an architectural project in Italy means to match with a strongly anthropized territory and with urban fabric stratified through history. In fact, especially in Italy, history must be considered as an immanent dimension of the architectural design and such a particular dimension is added to the traditional ones represented by the classical Vitruvius triad (Firmitas, Utilitas, Venustas).
