Fabrizio Bosso 4et: State of the Art

The Embassy of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute, in collaboration with the 13th Annual DC JazzFest and WPFW, proudly present the Fabrizio Bosso 4et live with State of the Art.

Bop of third millennium, with his amazing attacks, a proverbial sense of swing and a pouring speech, Fabrizio Bosso is the most brilliant trumpet of Italian jazz. For his concert in Washington DC, together with Julian Oliver Mazzariello (piano), Jacopo Ferrazza (double bass) and Nicola Angelucci (drums), Bosso will present dazzling revisitations of jazz standards along with virtuosic improvisations and original compositions.

“State of the Art” is also the title of the quartet’s double album, released on Warner Music in April 2017. Recorded live during their 2016 concerts in Rome, Tokyo and Verona, the collection captures the tour’s most significant moments, an experience that the quartet revives today with ever-renewed creativity and verve.

This concert will also be broadcasted live by WPFW.

FABRIZIO BOSSO

Italian post-bop trumpet sensation Fabrizio Bosso was born in Turin in 1973. He started playing at the age of five, studying under his father. He graduated from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Turin only ten years later, at fifteen. While in school, Bosso discovered jazz, playing with a big band and in small ensembles. Upon graduating, he was awarded a scholarship to study at St. Mary’s College in Washington, where he continued to pursue his new love for improvisation.

Starting in 1993, he garnered an international reputation for his flawless technique and exceptionally personal sound, touring under bandleaders like George Russell, Dave Liebman, and the great Steve Coleman. The next year, he won Summertime Jazz’s Best Band with his quintet, who were soon to make their recording debut.

At the age of 26, Bosso’s first album as a bandleader, Fast Flight, was released by Red Records. Impressing critics worldwide, Bosso won the “Miglior Nuovo Talento” (Best New Talent) award, chosen in a survey organized by “Musica Jazz” magazine. His second outing as front man would be for the Blue Note label in 2007.

Bosso’s career includes numerous performances as solo trumpeter, with important conductors such as Wayne Marshall or Maria Schneider. He also featured as special guest in Alessandro Cosentino’s jazz-rock version of La Bohème: “Mimì è una civetta”.

In November 2014, Bosso and Julian Oliver Mazzariello released Tandem, their much-awaited duo album on Verve/Universal (with special guests Fiorella Mannoia and Fabio Concato), followed in spring 2015 by Duke, a tribute to Duke Ellington (Verve/Universal) with Bosso’s newly formed quartet (Julian Oliver Mazzariello, piano,  Luca Alemanno, double-bass and Nicola Angelucci, drums) supported by the six-piece Paolo Silvestri Ensemble.

In 2016, Fabrizio Bosso invited the young Italian jazz singer Walter Ricci to record some tunes with his Spiritual Trio for the album “Jazz Italiano Live 2016”. That same year Bosso toured extensively in Italy and abroad with his quartet. Shortly after, Warner Music released the double album State of the Art Live!, recorded during the Quartet’s 2016 concerts in Rome, Tokyo and Verona.

At the Umbria Jazz Festival, in July 2017, Bosso presented his new project: a tribute to Dizzy Gillespie, “The Champ”, arranged by Paolo Silvestri.
