The Embassy of Italy, the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington D.C., and IA&A at Hillyer are pleased to present Emilio Cavallini’s first solo show in Washington DC, “Objectual Abstractions“, an exhibit that spans over three decades of his career, featuring twenty art pieces.
 
Emilio Cavallini is a renowned artist and designer. Through the years, his innovative style led him to collaborate with Mary Quant, Dior, Céline, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Gucci and celebrities like Madonna, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga were very supportive of his work. While he gained notoriety as a designer, Cavallini started to create artworks to fulfill his own personal interest. In 2010, he decided to devote himself exclusively to art and share his talent with the public. 
 
For his artistic endeavors, Emilio uses unconventional materials borrowed from the fashion world: nylon yarns, printed fabrics, his own tights, and yarn’s reels. His artistic research is based on geometry and mathematics: dots, lines, squares, triangles, circles arranged in a 3D environment. Everything seamlessly inspired to combinatorial principles, growth algorithms and the most recent mathematical-geometrical theories.
 
Objectual Abstractions will be shown in two locations in Washington D.C, between May 4th and May 27, 2018.  The Italian Cultural Institute will feature three large wall sculptures from the artist’s series inspired to 16th century Italian painter Pontormo and the exhibit at IA&A at Hillyer will be a retrospective featuring twenty of his works, including his best-known series Attuale-Infinito, Biforcazioni, Frattali and Diagrammi.

Emilio Cavallini

Emilio Cavallini (San Miniato, 1945) is a renowned artist and designer whose forty-year contribution to the fashion world includes singular creations for the houses of Mary Quant, Dior, Celine, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, and Gucci. His eponymous label is exported worldwide, from New York to London, Paris, Milan, Tokyo, and beyond. In 1989, he was awarded Venice’s Leone d’Oro for creativity and innovation. Italy’s Prime Minister and President recognized his artistic and industrial contributions over the last decade with several national honors including “Knight of Industry”, “Officer of the Republic,” and “Commendatore.” An artist’s book published by Skira was released in 2010 to celebrate three decades of his art practice. Cavallini’s work was presented in a solo exhibition at the 2011 Triennale of Milan, during which he constructed a site specific, four-meter cube of stocking thread. His work has been the subject of critical texts by Sergio Risaliti, Laura Cherubini, Silvia Pegoraro, among others. Rosai Ugolini Modern- New York (2015), Opera Gallery, Paris-France(2015), and Galleria Valmore, Vicenza-Italy (2015) presented his most recent solo exhibitions.
