Enrico Fermi, the “Pope of Physics”

The Embassy of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute cordially invite you to a conference and exhibit opening with:

  • Fernando Ferroni (INFN, National Institute of Nuclear Physics, President): Introductory Remarks.
  • Nigel Lockyer (Fermilab, Director): Neutrinos, from Fermi to DUNE.
  • Giovanni Organtini (Physics Museum of Rome Univ. La Sapienza, Director): The Uniqueness of Enrico Fermi.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the first human-made self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction, realized by Enrico Fermi at the University of Chicago, the Italian Embassy in Washington is organizing an event focused on the theme of innovation and scientific research. Fermi, nicknamed “the Pope” by his peers for his infallibility in calculations and intuition, was a rare – if not unique – kind of scientist. Most of the biggest players in the development of physics gave their own fundamental contribution in one specific field. Only few of them contributed to different topics:  among these, Fermi was probably the one whose work spanned the broadest possible spectrum. In his lecture Prof. Organtini will illustrate the most important results achieved by Fermi in various fields, along with an elementary illustration of the physics involved.
