The Romantic Guitar from Naples to Barcelona

Two guitarists Pino Feola and Krishnasol Jiménez Moreno will perform works from the 1800s, by such composers as Ferdinando Carulli, Mauro Giuliani and Fernando Sor. Both musicians will perform on two original guitars built by French lute makers C. Roudholf in 1810 and R. Lacote in 1830, the latter described in the Universal Dictionary of Lute Makers by René Vannes as being the Stradivari of Guitars.

The first composition that will be performed is a delicate duo by the Neapolitan composer Ferdinando Carulli, one of the greatest guitarists from the beginning of the 1800s. Carulli achieved great success in Paris, having moved there following a fortunate series of concerts in April of 1808. Today Carulli remains an important reference for the teaching of guitar, thanks to his historic Metodo Op. 27.

Following will be a Rossiniana composition by the guitarist Mauro Giuliani from Apulia. Giuliani also found success abroad, but in Vienna, where he transferred in 1806. Here, thanks to his incomparable technical mastery of the instrument, he was renamed “the Paganini of the guitar.” He became extremely famous and gained the esteem and friendship of Paganini himself, not to mention Rossini, Moscheles and Beethoven.

The Rossiniana op. 119 will be performed by Pino Feola. This composition includes a series of themes by the celebrated Gioachino Rossini. The following themes will be presented: “Assisa a pie d’un salice” from Othello, “Languir per una bella,“ “Ai capricci della sorte,“ “Caro caro ti parlo in petto“ from L’Italiana in Algeri and “Cara! Per te quest’anima” from Armida.

The program will continue and end with two works by Fernando Sor from Barcellona: L’Encouragement op. 34 and  Souvenir de Russie Op. 63. When the Spanish expelled the French in 1813, Sor and many other artists and aristocrats that had supported the French left Spain as they feared being punished. In Paris, Sor began to gain notoriety for his talent as a composer and for his ability to play the guitar. He ended up performing throughout Europe.

L’Encouragement is the most known and performed duo composition by Sor. It’s a joyful composition starting with a lyrical Cantabile introducing a Theme with Variations. The work ends with a brilliant Waltz.

The Souvenir de Russie is a vast composition, structured with an Introduction, a vocal theme and nine Variations, in which it is possible to hear the entire palette of the guitar playing techniques, and an Allegro finale, brilliant and virtuous.
