online > Rita Marcotulli & Luciano Biondini – La Strada Invisibile | concert

The power of melody is the musical bonding element of pianist Rita Marcotulli and accordion player Luciano Biondini. La Strada Invisibile (The Invisible Road), the title of this concert, is the imperceptible thread seamlessly bringing together the jazz, classical music and Italian song pieces chosen by the virtuoso performers.

The remarkable similarities between their careers is what conveys Rita and Luciano’s intuitive musical understanding.  They both started with classical music at a very early age; developed their musicianship through a classical education, and they both always shared a great love for traditional Italian songs.

Rita Marcotulli, an icon of Italian jazz, carved herself an impressive international career in a very short period of time. She played alongside greatest jazz musicians such as Chet Baker, Joe Lovano, Paul Bley and Palle Danielsson. Luciano Biondini, one of the top accordion players on the music scene, played with Rita in a quartet for several years.

RITA MARCOTULLI

Born in Rome, Rita Marcotulli is the daughter of a sound engineer who collaborated with Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone and Arthur Rubinstein among many others. At the age of five she fell in love with the piano, which she studied at Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome.

In the early 80s, she appeared on the fervent jazz Roman scene where she performed along with others in selective clubs. Over the years Rita played with well-known musicians such as Chet Baker, Steve Grossman, Peter Erskine, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Charlie Mariano, Tony Oxley, Michel Portal, Richard Galliano, Enrico Rava, Michel Benita, Aldo Romano, Kenny Wheeler, Bob Moses and Andy Sheppard.

From a stylistic point of view, her career was deeply marked by her pursuit of melody and the love for an evocative rather than hyper-technical music style. In 1987, the magazine “Musica Jazz” voted her “Miglior nuovo talento italiano” (Best new Italian Talent). The following year she was summoned by Billy Cobham to be part of his formations. More recently, she participated in the making of the film “Basilicata coast to coast”, for which she recorded the soundtrack. This music score won her the Golden Ciak in 2010, the Silver Ribbon for best soundtrack and the David di Donatello for the best musician (first woman ever to receive this award) along with the Top Jazz Award 2011 as Best Italian Jazz Artist. In 2019, President Sergio Mattarella awarded her the honorary title of “Officer” of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

Today, Marcotulli is a renowned pianist and composer, admired for her unique style and ability to improvise. Her source of inspiration includes influences from Brazilian, African and Indian music.
