Amori che non sanno stare al mondo by Francesca Comencini

Premiering in 2017 at the Locarno Film Festival, Francesca Comencini’s Amori che non sanno stare al mondo (Stories of Love That Cannot Belong to This World) is a river of words and irony and takes the risky gamble of talking about love as it comes to an end.

Claudia (Lucia Mascino) and Flavio (Thomas Trabacchi) have been in an all-encompassing and intellectually stimulating passionate relationship for seven years. In between the tug of war and late nights filled with paradoxical, universal conversations and psychiatric drugs disguised as vitamins, their story stops short. He feels the need to come back down to earth after a long and dizzying flight while she can’t quite manage to get there, imprisoned somewhere between with compulsive monologues stuck on repeat. The film, which was nominated for 2 Nastri d’Argento, depicts two generations, dealing with pain, and powerful love stories we can all relate to.

Francesca Comencini

Filmmaking siblings Cristina and Francesca Comencini – daughters of celebrated Italian director Luigi – have long been active in both literature and cinema and both have adapted their own books for the big screen. The latest film from younger sister Francesca sees her adapt her own 2013 novel, a story inspired by her romantic relationships and those of her female friends.

Born in 1961 in Rome, Francesca started directing in 1984 with Pianoforte, which won the Prize De Sica at the Venice Film Festival. Later, she worked with her father as a script-writer for Un ragazzo di Calabria(1987) and La Boheme. After gettiing married with Daniel Toscan du Plantier, she settled in France where she directed La lumière du lac (1988) and Annabelle partagée (1991). After that, she stayed away from cinema for a while in order to raise her three children. She came back in 1997 with a documentary work, Le parole di mio padre, which was selected at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival in the section ‘Un Certain Regard’. This film was followed by two socially and politically committed documentaries, one on the G8 summit in Genova and one about the death of young demonstrator Carlo Giuliani (Ragazzo). In 2004 she directed the feature fiction Mi Piace lavorare (2004) and in 2012, her film Un Giorno Speciale was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 69th Venice International Film Festival.
