Fiore by Claudio Giovannesi

One of the discoveries of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, Fiore is an award-winning drama from Claudio Giovannesi, the director of Ali Blue Eyes.  The movie takes place in a juvenile detention center in Italy where Daphne, the 17-year old protagonist, ends up after being imprisoned for petty crime. While incarcerated there, she meets Josh, an inmate from the neighboring male wing of the prison. Relationships are prohibited and so their blossoming romance takes form through smuggled letters and surreptitious conversations snatched through wire fences. But fate, and the situation is against them, as pressures from both sides of the prison walls pose a threat to their growing feelings for each other.

Giovannesi’s third feature, Fiore is the result of four months of interviews and research at the Instituto Penale per i Minori, a juvenile detention center in Rome, and the resulting film is an enthralling slice of social realism. Daphne Scoccia is a force to be reckoned with as the volatile but irrepressible Daphne, trying to find release from a system that has failed her.
